Return to Sport Splint (Orthosis) Fabrication

One of my favorite things to do as a physical therapist is fabricate custom splints for patients. It’s extra special when it allows someone to get back to doing what they love sooner than later.

This particular splint was made for B, a 13-year old boy who sustained a fifth metacarpal neck fracture while playing hockey. His doctor cleared him to return to hockey if he had a custom splint made to protect the fracture.

I was able to see the patient within one business day of the referral. B brought his hockey gloves and stick to the appointment to ensure the splint fit and felt good while handling his stick. B was so happy that he could easily fit his glove over the splint and join his teammates at practice later that evening. Good luck B!
